MOLE REMOVAL TOPIC: The Size & Color of Moles

The Latin word for a mole on the skin is [nevus]; meaning, "SPOT"

On our mole removal glossary page, which is dedicated to medical information about moles, we talked about how common moles are known medically as [nevi]. To continue... these "Moles or Nevi" are clusters of darker pigmented cells that often appear on your body as small, dark brown spots. Usually these mole pop up on your face, arms and legs and torso. Moles come in a range of colors and can develop virtually anywhere on your body, including your scalp, armpits, under your nails, and between your fingers and toes. Facial moles can be most annoying.

According to the Mayo Clinic, "Most people have between 10 and 40 moles, although the number you have may change throughout life. New moles can appear into mid-adulthood".

The great majority of moles are nothing to worry about. Most are harmless, but in rare cases, moles may become cancerous. This is not to be taken lightly. Monitoring your moles and other pigmented patches on your body is an important step in the diagnosis of skin cancer, especially malignant melanoma. Although not all melanomas develop from pre-existing moles, many begin in or near a mole or other dark spot on the skin. If you are over the age of 40, checking your body for moles needs to be a monthly, if not weekly event.

MY MOLES ALL LOOK DIFFERENT... IS THAT OK?

The typical mole is a plain, brown spot. "Moles come in a wide variety of colors, shapes and sizes. They can be flesh-colored, reddish-brown, medium to dark brown, or believe it or not sometimes mole are blue. Moles vary in shape from oval to round, and be as small as a pinhead or large enough to cover an entire limb." In some extreme cases, the mole with cover almost the entire body.

The surface of your mole can and probably is, different than the next persons. Some mole are smooth, some are wrinkled. There are flat moles and raised moles. A lot of moles start out flat and brown, and then later, they become slightly raised and lighter in color. Some may become raised enough that they form a small stalk.

Most report moles developing between the ages of 20 to 30.

WARNING:: If your mole changes size, shape or color, or if a new mole develops in adult life it should be evaluated by a dermatologist. They may examine the mole by dermoscopy.
